Quick tutorial #9: How to bind your RC speed controller

- Categories : Reno's tutorials

Quick tutorials are a simple way to understand the settings of your car in a few minutes.

A subject, a short video, in order to answer 2 essential questions: WHY and HOW?

VIDEO

You have just bought a new speed controller, a new radio, a new receiver?

It is necessary to bind your speedo with your remote control.

Assuming that everything is perfectly wired between your speed controller and your motor, and that your receiver is well paired with your radio (see another tutorial or your radio's instruction manual).

Before anything else, everything must be ready to drive with the battery connected and your radio ready.

With the car turned off, let's turn on the radio.

Navigate through the menus in order to reset all the trims to 0 and the end points to 100%.

No need to touch the steering settings (often called ST in the menus), just throttle.

It is sometimes easier to start directly with a new model.

The end points are often called "EPA" or "end points".

They should be set to 100% on the throttle side (often called F "forward") and 100% on the brake side (often called B "brake").

No need to increase these values to 150, you will not have more power!

Once the radio is ready, everything will happen on the car in this tutorial.

We take the example of the Hobbywing speed controllers but it is generally the same procedure to follow for all models (Konect, SkyRC, Orion, Performa, Tekin, Reedy...).

Depending on the brand and model, the switches are either external or with a single integrated on/off button.

EXTERNAL SWITCH CONFIGURATION

If your switch is an external one, there is a small black button next to the big on/off button, often called "set" or "setup".

In this case, start by holding down the set button, while turning on the speed controller with the on/off button.

The ESC will beep continuously and the LED will flash. The motor should not be spinning during the entire operation.

  • Let's start by pairing the neutral.

Leave the trigger or stick in the neutral position, and press the set button once.

The ESC should beep once.

  • Next, let's move on to the throttle pairing. Accelerate to full throttle and hold this position while pressing the black button one click.

The ESC should beep twice.

  • Next, let's move on to pairing the brake or reverse.

You can now switch to the maximum brake position with the trigger or stick and click the small button again.

The speedo should beep three times, then another two beeps, and then the LED stops blinking and no more beeps are heard.

At this point, your combo is functional and ready to use. If you accelerate, the motor will run.

If the controller continues to flash or beep, there is a problem.

Either your limit switches are not reset to 100% or the plug on your speed controller is not connected properly.

INTERNAL SWITH CONFIGURATION

In this case, you will have only one on/off button integrated in the ESC block.

It is this button that you will have to hold down and click to register the different limits.

At startup, hold down the on/off button. The drive beeps and the LED flashes.

The order will always be the same: neutral, full throttle, full brake.

  • Let's start by register the neutral.

Leave the trigger or stick in the neutral position, and press the on/off button once.

The controller should beep.

  • Next, let's move on to the throttle pairing. Accelerate to full throttle and hold this position while pressing the on/off button one click.

The drive should beep twice.

  • Next, let's move on to pairing the brake or reverse.

You can now switch to the maximum brake position with the trigger or stick and click the on/off button again.

The drive should beep three times, then beep two more times, and then the LED will stop flashing and no beeps will be heard.

At this point, your drive is functional and ready for use.

IF YOU CHANGE YOUR SPEEDO SETUP...

Importantly, if you decrease the end points or EPA for throttle to reduce the power or braking forces, be sure to return to 100% (as seen above) if you need to pair your ESC again.

Similarly, if you change the parameters of your speed controller using an OTA wireless program box or a programming card.

You should repeat this pairing procedure after each change.

You are now ready to go to the track, and you can adjust the parameters of the EPA values to modulate the power of your electronic speed controller (top speed and/or braking power).

See you soon for a new episode!
